 What is translation? Translation - Slide
In a translation or slide, a shape is moved along a straight line without turning. The shape in the new position is called a translation image of the shape. The translation is described by the number of squares moved right or left and up or down. General properties to identify translations:

- the 2-D shape and its image are congruent

- the 2-D shape and its image have the same orientation (that is, if we go around the object ABCD in a clockwise direction, we should be able to also go around its image A'B'C'D 'in a clockwise direction.)



The translation rule for the following rectangle ABCD is 9 units right and 4 units up.
