Science/ grade 6: Today’s topic for revision- How scientists invented batteries- Learner’s book- pages 92 and 93.
Main points-
The Baghdad battery
Description
The Baghdad Battery or Parthian Battery is a set of three artifacts which were found together: a ceramic pot, a tube of copper, and a rod of iron.
Galvani’s discovery:
Luigi Galvani (September 9, 1737–December 4, 1798) was an Italian physician who demonstrated what we now understand to be the electrical basis of nerve impulses. In 1780, he accidentally made frog muscles twitch by jolting them with a spark from an electrostatic machine.
The voltaic pile:
The voltaic pile was the first electrical battery that could continuously provide an electric current to a circuit. It was invented by Italian physicist Alessandro Volta, who published his experiments in 1799.
Volta demonstrated in 1794 that when two metals and brine-soaked cloth or cardboard are arranged in a circuit they produce an electric current.
No homework.
